Setting aside tax as a freelancer — FAQ

How much of my 1099 income should I set aside for taxes?
It depends on your profit, filing status and state. Self-employment tax alone is 15.3% on 92.35% of profit up to the Social Security wage base, and federal and state income tax come on top. The dashboard works out your own rate from your projected yearly profit and applies it to each month.
When are quarterly estimated taxes due in 2026?
For income earned January–March, the payment is due April 15, 2026; April–May, June 15, 2026; June–August, September 15, 2026; and September–December, January 15, 2027. A due date that falls on a weekend or legal holiday moves to the next business day.
How can I avoid an underpayment penalty?
Generally you avoid it if you owe less than $1,000 after withholding and credits, or if you paid at least 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's tax, whichever is smaller. If last year's adjusted gross income was over $150,000, the prior-year figure is 110%.
What if my income is uneven during the year?
Equal quarterly payments are the default. If most of your income arrives late in the year, the annualized income installment method (Form 2210, Schedule AI) can reduce or remove the penalty for earlier quarters.
